Veteran Jim West of South Pasadena, who only last Friday night startled CMC Motocross fans with a double win performance-both via sweeps-, mixed up the ingredients again this week and repeated the whole show over again.
They were victories No. 8 and No. 9 for the lanky factory Husqvarna rider in the month of May; one more and he will become only the third rider in history to win 10 or more during one calendar month. Six of his nine victories have come right here at Irwindale Raceway! It also brings his season total to 13, three shy of the leader in that department: Marty Smith of San Diego.Val Tamietti of Baldwin Park was again the main victim of West's tenacious 250cc Pro showing while "Jumpin" Joe" Johnston, the only black racer in the history of the CMC ever to have won a Pro event overall, put Compton in second place all three times in the 500cc class to earn him a solid second overall behind West.
Four different riders clashed for the 125cc Pro victory and Garden Grove's rapid Mark Tyer emerged the victor by only the margin of one point to Mike Bell of Lakewood, who continues to lead the CMC Points Championship for 1974 and making it look like a runaway.
