The best weather in along time was seen today for the SAM race. The only problem was that the overall race wasn't quite as sensational as it could of been because the Pro people were saving themselves and their machines for the big CM $1000 purse race just the next day.
So the Pro contest was narrowed down to a couple of fast cats who victored and were always on the gas. The others were lost in the confusion of being lapped. Steve Hurd Motorcycles Robert Hannah won the 250 Pro class over the small class but has been known to do so'against some of the faster racers that have appeared here in past SAM races. Hannah just boogied to victory and it was really apparent when Robert would pull the front wheel up on his Husky on several of the real fast straights. Jack Philips landed second but I believe had a bad moto because I saw him and his machine sidelined right after the hauling roller coaster type jump.Gary Tomczak captured the 500 Pro win and didn't fall down over the berm just before the Webco uphill like he did last weekend. Behind Gary's Maico flew Scott Scott who has just been ranked into this class after blowing off the Intermediate people for 1 don't know how long.
Luc Deley has been doing excellent on his new gas shocked CZ that he just bought from the Bike Shop (BS) in Orange. At first today in the 250 Intermediates he had clutch problems and had a bad start so he was well behind and had to motor on up to the pack. Well Luc not only caught up to the leaders but soon passed them all and took the first moto win.
In the second and final Intermediate moto Steve Rhyan was on the throttle of his new Maico and ended up with that win. Rhyan DNF'ed the first moto so his day was actually foiled even though he took the second moto win so Luc Deley bagged the 250 Intermediate win for the day with first place over Jeff Tauzin (Yam) and Tim Tolar on another BS CZ.
In the 125 Novice 10 guys were all after the giant first place Majestic Trophy. In the first moto Mike Williams who has a very sano DG Performance Specialties Honda Elsie motored out ahead and was out-a-sight from all others. But after that and for the rest of the day Pat Delligata stunned everyone as he hooked the next two moto wins on his Whittier Honda prepared Honda. Delligata ended up with a fine 2-1-1 placing for the day which turned 'him into the 125 Novice winner over Williams who has a 1-3-3 finish Jim Smith, Jeff Lysdale, Carl Gieselman and Rick Kaplan (Hon).
