With all the promises of track changes for each race, the track promoters made changes for this race as promised. But a talk with some of the riders stated that the two bumps in the track at the starting straight-a-way was bad. Watching the small bore bikes they all had trouble. There were numerous crashes in the new section, but none serious. With all the bitching, I know it will be corrected for the next race. Read More...
Howerton and Hart Haul In the Hail at Hangtown - Part 1
Mke McAtee got the hole shot in the first 125 Expert moto only to loop a chain going down the hill. He re-mounted and made it up to sixth when the chain did it again, putting Mike out for the time being.

This year’s Hangtown was really a classic, in every sense of the word. The past two years this has been the race of races, with letter perfect weather. But this year Ma Nature opened up and didn't let loose until Sunday afternoon. When the skies finally cleared the rain and hail caused many an upset throughout the weekend.
We rolled in Friday night to find the pits already almost full and the camp grounds quiet. Things got started early Saturday with the Sportsmen getting ready to race.
Practice was sent out in shifts, hoping the track would dry. The two mile long track was the best around. It combined everything from water crossings, to jumps, bumps, whoops, and anything else imaginable. The track was a good test for the Sportsmen and an excellent racing surface for the Pros.

The 250 Expert class was almost completely made up of riders from the northern areas. But the sore thumb in the bunch was Dave Haugh. This is one of Al Baker's latest riders and he is mounted on a new Honda 250. It is the production model that will be on the dealer's floors soon. Dave was looking good until the bike sucked some water into the ignition, then it went belly up and Dave had a nice walk to the pits in the mud. Read More...

With all the names in this race, it too was another one for "guess who will win?" There were over 20 people that had an equal chance of winning.
When the gate dropped, almost im¬mediately Rich Eierstedt dropped out. Charging for the first corner, his throttle stuck and he was heading for the fence. He grabbed the clutch and sat out the remainder of the race.
In the lead was Can-Am's Jimmy Ellis. He had got the advantage and was leading Husky-mounted Kent Howerton. These two were so close it would take a doctor to separate them. And they stayed just like this for almost the entire moto.
Ellis would have the lead, then Howerton, then Ellis, etc. It went back and forth so many times there was no keeping track of it. Finally, Howerton pulled away from Ellis when Jimmy started to have bike troubles. Ellis lost his brakes!

What looks like the old Don Hansen style, has finally made it's way back into the racing scene. Hansen, as you might recall, mjured his ankle when he was just beginning to show some super impressive racing style a while back and the injury left him a spectator for too long. Don, mounted tonight on a very smooth running Revell Two-Stroke Maico, showed his old dominating style. What was impressive was the fact that he beat out his closest competitor in night racing, Willy Harper, who is all but unbeatable most of the night racing time. Read More...
