Eddie Cole, making his first West Coast appearance in quite some time, rolled a Bultaco to two straight wins during today's BCA sanctioned motocross program on the International track at Indian Dunes Park.
With the temperature hovering in the low 40's and the entire show unfolding to a large group of spectators who were chilled to the bone, Cole over came a first-moto lead that had been established by CZ-riding Billy Payne, continuing on to post substantial victories in both 20-minute heat races for contestants in the 250 Expert division.
Payne, who was aboard a very rapid CZ for the Revell works of Sun Valley, came off the starting line in the first round, appearing as if he couldn't be caught by a tornado. However, during the early portion of the second lap, the leader's mid-bore scooter suddenly lost its fire, putting him out of the running for the balance of the day.
Cole was never headed from that moment on, while defeating, among others, Tony Rogers (Mai), Gary Huber (Mai) and Fred Hoblit, who was a astride a Bultaco. After dropping the first moto for Open Experts to Yamaha-mounted Randy Scott, Will "The Harpoon" Harper exploded to a somewhat easy-though a bit back and forth-win in the final round for the class.
Tied in the overall score with Scott-both riders holding a three-point tally-at the conclusion of the contest, Harper, by virtue of his win in the last moto, took home the triumph for the Revell Raiders. Among closest runners-up to the Maico pilot were Ron Haase (Bui), Tom Claire (CZ) and big Don Hicks (Mai). David Taylor, who was making still another appearance on his swift Honda at the 'Dunes, captured both heats for the 125 Experts in a rather impressive style.
Though finding himself forced to turn back early-lap bids from Tom Ryan (YZ) in both events for the division, Taylor was clear and sailing at the final wire in each instance. Other top efforts in the class came from Jeff Haase (Hon), Mike Mossman (Hon), Willie Amaradio (Hon) and John Caper (Hon). With an outstanding turnout of the Old Timers' club on hand for the day's action, an overall victory at the Master riding level went to Vidar Anderson (Mai), who just managed to slide by Blackie Lewis (Mai) in the final point tally. Other runners-up included J.I.. Siebrandt (Ric), Gene Fox (Mai), Art McNamee (Mai) and Dave Chandler (Yam).
Marvin Olson, racing a Maico against the O.T. Experts, won both of his 15-minute motos, easily capturing the overall triumph for the class. Those closest to the winner included George Meyer (Mai), Bob Coffman (Hus), Steve Pyle (Yam) and Dick Doyle (CZ). The scramble of O.T. Amateurs-a donnybrook from start to finish in both rounds of competition-went to Bob Pawling (Yam) with a 3-1 score. Close runners-up included Lee Howell (Mai), Dick Varvel (Gre) and Jim.Warden, who was mounted on still another Maico.
Bernie Kiel (Bui, a winner of both 15-minute scraps for his class, collected the largest trophy for the O.T. Novices, unseating Dave Webster (CZ), David Bartlett (Hus) and Gerald Hutchinson (Mai), among others. Six riders scored grand slams in the racing that involved Sportsmen divisions. Those who completed the afternoon with the perfect scores were Sandy Gonzales, Powder Puff (Hon), Mike Harnacker, lOOcc (Suz), George Viens, 125 (Hon), Bobby Kline, 125 (Hon), Jon Hagar, 250 (Bui), and Jerry Harris, Open (SUZ).
With a good field of Sidehacks on hand for today's BCA races, overall victories went to the team of Jim Stevens and Bob Sanner who were sliding a Honda in the heavyweight division; while gaining the lightweight honors was the team of Don Huntley and Steve Ritchie, campaigning a Yamaha rig that was capable of challenging the larger machinery in both heats.
