SAM at Ascot Park

Ascot Park hosted the second Super Bowl of Motocross qualifier for high school riders in the Los Angeles County last Saturday.

Top riders continued to make the scene at Ascot each Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The Scholastic Association of Motorsports has also started working with many schools and community services. Also each rider received four free passes for next Saturday's high school races at Ascot.

The Gardena and Torrance police departments have also become quite interested in the SAM high school program. Also many free passes have been given out to many of the school administrators for the upcoming season.

Looking over the action last Saturday, it was David Taylor a newcomer to Ascot from Arroyo High making his first appearance in the high school competition. Taylor, who was riding for Pasadena Honda, collected the wins in the two ten-minute motos in the 125 Expert, as he defeated Carson High's Greg Toyama, who was aboard a Hodaka for PJ's.

Taylor was really impressive on the Ascot course, and it would be quite interesting to see David run against top 125 riders, Jeff Bunn and Steve McFarland, who took last week off.

Herbie Shelton of South High in Torrance collected his second straight victory in the High School action at Ascot, as he easily captured both motos in the 250 Junior class. Shelton, riding a fast Maico from Torrance Cycle Parts, has picked up some early qualifying points for the high school Super Bowl of Motocross, as he is one of the few riders to win the opening two races.

Another rider who collected his second win in two tries was West High's Danny Westergaard, as he rode his Yamaha to victory in 100 Junior class. Finishing behind Westergaard was his teammate Jerry Lawson and Rummy Cobbs, also from West High in Torrance.

In the 125 Beginners, Carson's Rye Hefley rode his Honda to the overall victory as he finished second in the opening moto and captured the second moto in a good battle with Mira Costa High's Don Cameron. Danny Letson, Carson High, Dean Gates, Carson High and Monroe High's Jerry Blackburn rounded out the top five positions. In the 125 Juniors, South High's Don Huizing picked up the overall win with second going to Pete Murillo, who lost the seat and fender off his Honda in the first moto. Crescenta High's Gary Penleton took third overall.
