If who didn't race in this SAM event because you feared a muddy track you really made a mistake. Today the track stayed perfect and the bulldozer crew modified a couple of places to slow the fast cats down. But from what the visiting Canadian racers have said about the local Cal tracks this proved good. I think that they should slow down the haulin' straightaways and put in even a few more jumps and throw in a couple of off-camber ones.
Now the guy that blew off the Expert classes today was the Wheelsmith Motorcycles racer Morris Malone. Now for this two forty minute race I got alot of inside details from the Bike Shop racer Jeff Clark. Clark said that he was partially at fault for fouling up Bruce Baron's day because the two crashed together in the first moto. Bruce had another crash in that moto but he did it by himself that time, yet still he ended up with the win in that moto. In the second super long moto Baron was doing fine till his rear brake pedal noodled on his YZ. But at the same time Morris was having a few problems because brakes on his Maico were locking up, I guess that's the brakes. So the guy who vanned off with 50 bucks was Morris Malone who edged out Baron and Robert Hannah on a Husky who had a third and a second finish.
Now while all this time Clark was telling me about the plagues of Malone and Baron he was having wiring problems with his CZ. So one could only conclude that Jeff did not have the 250 Intermediate class wired. In the last moto Keith Dysert gassed it ahead of the class and hooked the win away from Jeff. So Dysert won the whole thing ahead of Clark Brian Craze, Mark Dionne and Rick Rasmusson.
A team of brothers really cooked in the 100 classes today. There are several brother racing teams in SAM the Gillmans of the 250 Expert class, the Eides of the 125 Juniors and now the Tiner Bros, of the 100's. Chris whipped the 100 Beginners over Greg Overholt and Mike Ouimette on his Suzuki while Steve Tiner who was also on a Suzuki dusted the 100 Juniors over Greg Apostolon and other brother Greg Tiner.
Larry Nelson who wore a trick looking full-coverage helmet and raced an Elsinore with a trick red line swing-arm just plain killed the 125 Juniors. I noticed Larry crossing the finish line in first and as he did that his parents were watching and they just nodded their heads with approval. Nelson swept the race in all but the first moto and the second placer in that contest was Tom Da versa. Of course this class was dicing with contestants of the 125 Novices too and I often saw Nelson dice Randy Skinner of that class. Skinner did his share of racing this weekend last night at OCIR and this afternoon at SAD. However, Bob Bourne proved actually a little faster and he swept the class with three straight firsts for the overall in front of Skinner, Greg Painter, Mike Chandler, Kym Kirschenmann, Mike Monaghan, and Bill Wepplo.
We had one mean crash which occurred to Tim Tolar who is really great in the 250 Junior class. I guess Tim lost control while going over the roller coaster hill at Sad or something like that; first stretcher case o! not too bad off Tim.
