Mother nature did her best to dampen the spirits of the N.B.A. Bicycle MX races at the Castaic Saddle Club Friday night, but to no avail, as the downpour let up the racers began to appear. The short storm put the track in fine shape, as the rider's prepared to mount their bikes. Those hardy souls who showed up and braved the elements were rewarded with some of the best racing to date.
The 8 and under class was so large that it was split into two divisions, with Matt Devitt, from Santa Monica, and Chuck Sharbrough, of Los Angeles, winning their events. In the main event the overall finishers were Sharbrough first, Bowers, of Saugus, second, Matt Devitt third, and Ben Paoello fourth.Joe Franklin, of Valencia, took first place in the 9-11 Novice class with Kevin Dragoo second and Treein Turpin third.
The 12-13 Novice class saw all Newhall boys taking the first four places. Mike Williams again undefeated finished with a 1-1-1 for first overall, Marty Harned second, Nick Parrino third, and Greg Franklin fourth.
Newcomers to racing Ken Hall and Jim Gerlack took the first and second places in the 12-13 Expert class, followed by Sylmar's Danny Garcher for third and Lancaster's Rod Collins fourth.
Scott Rockwell and Bobby Encinas had their own racing going on in the 14-and-over Expert, and the Open class. Rockwell won the Open and Encinas took the Expert class.
Craig Camerit got a grand slam in the 14-and-over Novice class with Ted Guilmette second and John Vitale third.
The last race of the night was the 14-and-over Intermediates, these boys put on quite a show as the competition was all there. Newhall's Art Pullen and Santa Monica's Robbie O'Hara each won their events going into the main. Pullen was first off the line and maintained his lead throughout the race, with Ernie Ernsdorf close behind for the second, Rick Collins finished third, and Perry Kramer fourth.
N.B.A. racing will resume next Friday night at 8 p.m. with the gates opening at 6 p.m.
