The fifth round of the nine-race Trans-AMA Motocross Series, scheduled for last Sunday at St. Charles, Missouri, was cancelled when the promoter of the event refused to post the $15,000 cash purse with American Motorcycle Association officials.
Heavy rains drenched the St. Charles Motocross Park near St. Louis during the early morning hours, leaving the track a quagmire. Light rain continued to fall as AMA officials arrived to collect the purse money which, according to AMA rules, must be posted prior to the beginning of practice.Fearing that the inclement weather would drastically reduce the crowd, promoter Edison Dye of Inter-American Racing of San Diego, California, refused to turn over the $15,000 purse. Dye was quoted as saying that he stood to lose $20,000 if he ran the race and $10,000 if he didn't.
When attempts to change Dye's mind were unsuccessful, officials were left with no alternative but to cancel the event. No re-scheduling or addition of another race to make up for the cancellation is planned at this time.
Consequently, Gerrit Wolsink of Holland maintains his point lead in the series. Wolsink has 390 points, followed by his teammate and three-time World Champion, Roger DeCoster of Belgium, with 360.
The next event in the series will be held as planned on Sunday, November 10, at Lake Whitney Cycle Ranch near Whitney, Texas.
