Corona Raceway's big double motocross extravaganza got underway once last Friday night, as the Inland Empire High School Motocross League competes on the infield course with the Open competition motocross competing on the tight and fast outside course.
With Dale Teubner running the high school event, Chuck Murray, the general manager at Corona, is in charge of the Open competition, as three motos are run with at least six laps on each mo to.Last Friday night, the riders for the Open motocross continued to build, and many of the top high school riders were on hand, as their high schools were not competing on the infield course.
In the 250 Novice division, Montesa-mounted Stan Flanders captured the overall win, as the 19-year-old Rialto rider took two of the three motos in the three-quarters of a mile track. Maico rider, Rick Napier, made an appearance at Corona Raceway last Friday after a long absence, and Napier, who lives in Stanton, came through with a fine second place overall, including a win in the first moto.
Norte Vista High motocross star, George Forte, now riding for Youngblood Cycles in San Bernardino, finished in the third position riding his 125 Honda Elsinore in the 250 class. Cooper-mounted D.A. Davidson and 13-year-old Mike Nicklaus (CZ) rounded out the top five positions.

Crestline's Steve Harper rode his 125 Honda Elsinore to the win in the 125 Novice, as he held off a fine field of riders *o take the overall victory.
Sixteen-year-old Corona High School Motocrosser Rick Sherman showed up last Friday night to stay in practice for the high school competition, and Rick rode his Honda to a second place finish. Another high school star, Jeff Middleton of Norte Vista, rode his Honda to the third spot overall with Lake Arrowhead's Davy Jones and 14-year-old Mark Shader finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
In the 100 Novices, it was a Scott Sheedy benefit, as the 13-year-old rider from Corona easily captured the overall win on the smaller course. Another 13-year-old rider, Dana Warne of Riverside, finished in the second spot behind Sheedy with Bellflower's Rober Dilley following.
Two Anaheim riders dominated the Mini cycle class, as Honda-mounted Ricky Buccola won the overall class honors with Robert Muller (Hon) collecting the second place finish. 12-year-old Joe Nist of Pomona rounded out the top three spots. week. There are others in the Intermediate and Expert classes who are very consistent simply because they dig on the 2-40 minute motos. The big Inter-AMA stars often come to battle on Saturdays because of this and also because of the coming Trans-AMA here on December 1st.
Today's Expert class was excellent and the real fast cat was Morris Malone who must be getting ready for that big race. Last year he stoked everyone with a big bucks support class win on a trick YZ and it looks like he's going to be challenging the competition on a Wheelsmith Maico this year. In the first moto Malone was in command and he had the day's win perfectly lined up then when the gate dropped in the second go and the pack passed by Malone was gone and must of split the scene due to a Maico breako. Another superstar was on the line-up as well and this was the fast guy in Kawasaki green who was Jim Cooke. So after Malone was out of it Cooke grabbed the lead and easily won the 250 Experts over new competitor in SAM racing who was Chuck Sherwood, David Hopkins on a Penton took third.

All of a sudden it seems like the guy that is really blowing off the 125 Junior class is Gregg Weston of Mission Viejo. Lately he had had some good dicing battles with the Saddleback Raceway's starter Jerry Stroner's son, Ron. Today Ron didn't make it for some reason, he was racing but didn't even place in the top three so instead quick Rick Rasmusson and Lee Cangiana captured second and third.
