High School Motocross at O.C.I.R.
Mark Asbury sky shots the 125 Expert class. He is really a stylish jumper, thanks to the big jumps at OCIR. Corley photo.

I'm already looking forward to seeing the approaching Superbowl of Motocross. Not just for the sake of the Europeans vs. Americans race but also because of the big High School qualifier battle. And things are really looking super, so come out and do it on Thursdays and Saturday nights at OCIR. In these night races they let you get a nice run for your money with more laps for each moto.
Dan Skahill is now driving around a new van that he acquired from Media Max. Dan is really going all out promoting the Superbowl of Motocross that is coming up this July. Corley photo.Everything about the next Superbowl is going to be first class so naturally the anouncers are going to be just the same for the event, Larry Huffman along with OCIR's fine announcer Dan Skahill will be firing up the P.A's. And tonight Dan Skahill, who is doing some of the promotional work for Media Max, cruised through the gates in a new Dodge van (my favorite) that had SUPERBOWL OF MOTOCROSS painted elaborately on the sides by Al Martinez.
Get this, tonight we had 11 high schools on hand for a fine show of Motocross racing! Costa Mesa Hi took home the bacon which in this case was the big overall trophy award.
Now the whole program was really a smooth one but the thing that kind of marred the race was another hairy crash that occurred on the sometimes treacherous Diving Board jump. The 125 Beginners were hot dogging it around when Vince lorio of Tustin had chain hassles. Apparently his chain derailed and there he was stuck in the mid of the track. Then a nasty chain reaction (another one of my crazy puns) occurred when a guy crashed into him and then another. Vince got off scott free while another guy became a bad stretcher case and had a noticeable amount of cushion torn off from the backside of his leathers, OOOOUCH!
And then I didn't exactly make things better for one guy who was moaning on the dirt when I came up to him and told him that his Suzuki forks were noodled. Anyway, despite all of the tragedies that occurred to those guys in the 125 Beginner class the race was darn good and exciting with Steve Schoenlein of Bilsa, Phil Carter of Costa Mesa and Paul Hernandez of Canyon taking the first three places.
Mike Williams looks like he is a bit higher than he planned on. But he keeps on racing at OCIR High School competition. Corley photo.
The best race of the night was the contest for the fast cats and naturally I'm talking about the Experts race. Brad Dutoit of El Toro Hi had machine problems a couple of weeks ago when he raced here, and that was defirately because he didn't have a rubber hose behind the carb. So tonight his bike from Mission Honda was all together and he had a good battle with Larry Lewellen of Costa Mesa who took second in this 125 Expert contest Larry says that he's doing better now that he slapped on his old 24L number plate and the plate brought him second place luck tonight while Mark Asbury hooked third on a Honda.
