With all the talk about 125's they say only the Honda can compete. Well don't let Gary Davis of Lompoc hear you say that, especially his dad. In the first moto of the 123 Juniors Gary on his Yamaha was out leading, but after a lap or two he seem to be slowing. Each time he went by it sounded like he would run out of gas on the straight-a-ways. He didn't stay in the lead too long but he did hang on to second throughout the moto. The second moto was different. Gary got the lead from the start and moved out to a commanding lead. Gary went on to win moto two and the overall win. It may not be too long before we may see Gary in with the Intermediates. A cnecH with Gary s mechanic (dad) I found why in moto one his bike was running sour. The carb. jets were filled with sand. I wonder where one would find sand?—everywhere!
One Yamaha rider hits ground while a Bui rider takes off. Funny thing is that the Buluco's bars look bent. Czerwinski photo. The 125 Experts were out in force, it was the biggest field I've seen for some time.
The jumps are just right out at Spillway Park, as this Bultaco rider really flies. Czerwinski photo.
Most of the time thee or four show up, todav a field of nine 125 Experts were ready to do battle. Moto one Larry Greer of Santa Maria on a Honda was out first and held the lead for two laps. I thought it was finally going to be Larry's day, but Jack Keese of San Luis Obispo on a Honda was to make it Jack's day. Jack flew into the lead while Larry held on to second. Moto two is when it happened. With Larry leading again, but before the first lap was over Jack had the lead and started throwing a rooster tail everywhere, and that'B-when it happened Jack opened up a lead no one could close. And enough of a lead to run another race in. That's what it was because Jack went on to lap the entire field. Jack did twenty laps while the rest only did 19 in the same time span. I think this is the first time any one has lapped the entire field. And while doing this there were no crashes or riders slowing down. Jack just went twice as fast as everyone. I look for this to go down as a track record.
The 125 Pro class goes for broke out at Spillway Park in Santa Maria. In the back is one of the Keese brothers, sponsored by Sambos. Czerwinski photo.
John Dallaire of Atascadero on a Husky in the 250 Experts was looking to take home first place money, but instead he was first to take home a broken bone. While leading in the first moto he slid out in a hair pin turn Bill Keese got by on the high side, Tom Bass tried the low side but could not turn enough to avoid hitting John. Tom ran over John and his bike. I was right there and got pictures. John's No was 3, Jack's No. 9 Tom Bass No. 12. Charles Halcomb of Santa Cruz on a Husky with a second in each moto netted him first place money.
Now that is getting it leaned over in a berm This rider is about to drag his bars as he rockets around the Spillway track. Czerwinski photo.
Mike Rehorn of Los Osos on a 250 Husky looks like he found some riders he can beat. Mike, racing for several years in the Junior and Intermediate ranks, was always in there charging only to find the young warriors were already there. Well Mike, 30 plus years old, now rides with the "over the hill gang". 1 suppose that's why the are called a gang, because they all gang up at the starting line-Beginner-Novice-Expert. Then all go off at the same time but are scored separate. Mike tells me this is his second win with the group. I noticed the 125 Hodaka was loaded back in to the van without any mud on it. Maybe he didn’t want to beat them on a 125!!!
