With everyone away at Hangtown, there was still enough to put on a race at Spillway. The 125cc Expert class was short as Larry Greer and the Sambo's team were gone. Anyhow, Allen Grisworld, of San Luis Obispo, riding a Kawasaki, took first 125 Expert I suppose it's been a long time since a 125 Kawasaki won in the Expert race, but hang on next week when the riders return from Hangtown. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. I reckon we've all heard that all our lives. About six weeks ago, maybe eight weeks ago, Steve Glatts had won the first two motos, and looked like a shoo-in for first overall, when up jumped the devil and rolled him a pair of snake-eyes in the form of Mark Lawrence. Lawrence had finished second to Glatts in the first two motos, but in the third moto, Lawrence took the lead and the win, while the best Glatts could do was a third place finish. Lawrence came out the overall winner on the best finish last moto rule. Well, in talking to Steve tonight, he had already won the first two motos, and he was talking to Steve Cross and myself about how he had never won a first place at Irwindale. He had a room full of second and third place trophies, but no first placers. Read More...

Hal Strauss, mounted on a rocket ship Cole Brothers Maico. came out to AME night races with an idea of beating the Revell Raiders and he ended up doing just that. Willy Harper was absent from the competition, leaving Don Hansen and Frank Giardina, of Revell's, to handle the fast Maico pilot. Also mixed into the 250 Pro class for the night was "Bullet" Joe Root, on a fast Ossa Phantom for Dirt Bike West and Analube oils. Read More...

Overcast skies were seen only in the early morning and the sun made it's reappearance for a change. The track was somewhat muddy but not really bad though. The places were I noticed most racers to have a mean and messy time was at the corner before the Webco Tower and at that point the pack is still elbow-to-elbow. The second messiest place was the corner right after the roller coaster hill where people were going down left and right. Read More...

The skies were gray, hinting maybe a touch of rain, but it never appeared as the action cooked out at Valley Cycle Park. Butch Lee from Dirt Bike Promotions brought up his crew from down south to put on one of the better District races of the year.
Everybody thought it was different, having the Experts, Amateurs, and Powder Puffs running in the morning, but everybody liked it. With this set-up, the Experts are home early and the Novices can sleep late and get to the track around noon.
Also, this compresses the action much more. But today that wasn't necessary, since there was action flowing all over.

The 250 Expert match was a surprise-Crazy Allen Cooke won it, but he didn't fall once. All day long people came up to me saying, "Allen won and he didn't fall!" Then they walked away in a daze. It was amazing!
In the first moto Allen got off to a fair start and had to work into the lead. It didn't take long. There was pressure from all sides but Allen gassed it.
One hot competiuor was Dave Zahrt. He was cooking until his Bul DNF'ed. Then he pulled into the pits and snatched Kenny's bike. He returned to the race and proceeded to gas it.

The American Motocross Club offered 600 big bucks to the day's big Pro winners. I must say that it was really a freaky day, the sun would ray down and then the clouds would dull things out again. But who cares about the weather or mud when there's money up for grabs. Everyone showed up for Hangtown even though it was a just a big mudsplash. Read More...
