The only two undefeated schools, Ramona and Upland, in the Inland Empire High School motocross league finally battled head to head last Friday, as one school would then remain unbeaten and at the top of the first division league standings.
Ramona, who was expected to be a powerhouse throughout the season, scored an upset earlier in the year, when they defeated the defending Champions, North High. Upland, who has really developed a fine team as of late, was not really counted on in the early part of the season, but suprisingly scored some excellent victories.Throughout the evening, the two schools battled back and forth with Ramona taking the overall victory scoring 254 points. Upland, who hung in close all the way, totaled 215 markers followed by Chino (43), Hemet (30), and Montclair (25). Ramona, who looks really tough to beat for the rest of the season, picked up many important points in the early races, such as, the Powder Puff, 100 Novice, and 125 Novice classes.
In the Powder Puffs, Toby Sweaney, a fine flat track and TT rider, captured all three motos for Ramona aboard a Honda. Lori Collins, a regular for Ramona, placed second overall on a Yamaha followed by Honda-mounted Sharon McGee, also from Ramona. Suzuki-mounted Larry Brown took the victory in the 100 Novices for Ramona, as Brown easily topped the field in all three motos with teammate George Ashley, riding a Hodaka, placing second and Upland's Augie Galaz was third.
In the 125 Novices, Ramona's Steve Speck claimed the overall victory, as the Honda rider placed second to Upland's Greg Sheets in the opening race. However, Speck came back strong in the final two motos to take the wins. Speck has an uncanny nack of getting off the line first, and Steve has Deemed to do that each and every time. Sheets, aboard a Honda, finished second overall followed by Chino's David Haagsma, who was on a Suzuki.
Other top riders for Ramona included Steve Bauer, Steve Anderson, and Gordy Collins. Bauer captured the 125 Expert aboard his super quick Honda over Collins and Upland's Jon Friesen. Anderson was the victor in the 175 Intermediate class with second place going to Tom Taliani, also from Ramona, and third to Jim Grady. Collins took the overall win in the 175 Seniors over Mark Lester and Friesen.
Leading the way for Upland were George Baker and Tim Hoover. Baker, riding a 125 Honda, took the victories in the 125 and 250 Intermediates with Hoover winning the 250 and Open Expert divisions.
