E.C.R.A. at Escape Country

ECRA at Escape Country

If someone were to ask, "How was racing at Escape Country last Sunday?", one word could describe it all. MUDDY.

The storms which drenched the track also caused other related problems such as delaying the race more than three hours past the normal start time. It seems the four wheel drive ambulance usually present at Escape Country was snowed in up at Big Bear Lake and was unable to make the race. Finally several phone calls and a half hours later an ambulance showed up and practice began.

There were only about 65 entries in the in the seventeen classes racing. Many of the entrants never made it through practice falling victim to muddy wet contacts, mud in the intakes, and mud in everything else it could get into.

The plight of the flag man this Sunday was not a bright one, since there were crashes galore at all tracks. Through thick and thin, they held their ground protecting our riders. Klugman photo.

Only 35 riders finished their motos, which left about a 50 per cent DNF rate. Kind of radical when you think about it. What the people who were left out there were doing couldn't really be classified as racing. Every one was slipping and sliding and falling. At least the ground was soft and almost no one was getting hurt in the falls.

To make things even worse there were several downpours during the motos. Some of the riders were thankful for the cloud bursts claiming it cleaned away some of the mud. We won't go into the who beat who race report since most of the classes only had one or two riders competing, and most of them were having trouble staying up.

The only riders that seemed at home running the mud-o-cross were the Old Timers. The muddier it is the more they like it. Eight out of eight riders finished all three of their motos a record no other class could claim.

Well, anyway, let's just hope the conditions are better on March 23rd for the upcoming $2000 purse race here at Escape Country. Come on out and get some bucks.
